Most standard commercial post lights are designed to slip over a 2 3/8-inch round tenon (the standard “pipe” size at the top of a pole). Some models may accommodate or include adapters for 3-inch poles. Always check the “mounting” specification on the product page.

Type V: The most common for circular post tops, distributing light in a full 360-degree circle. Ideal for the center of parking lots or plazas. Type III: Directs light forward and to the sides (wide throw), with minimal light behind the pole. This is better for perimeter lighting or roadways.

Many of our circular post top and square area lights are “Full Cutoff,” meaning they direct zero light upwards. This reduces light pollution and sky glow, making them compliant with most local Dark Sky ordinances.

It depends on the application. For walkways, 40W–60W (approx. 5,000–8,000 lumens) is common. For parking lots and general area lighting, 100W–150W models (12,000–20,000 lumens) are standard replacements for 400W Metal Halide fixtures.

Yes, many of our commercial LED post top lights are compatible with bi-level motion sensors. These sensors dim the light (e.g., to 30%) when the area is vacant and bring it to full brightness when motion is detected, offering maximum energy savings for parking lots.

A shoebox area light mounts to the side of a pole via a horizontal arm or tenon, directing light primarily in one direction — typically Type III or Type II distribution for roadway or perimeter applications. A post top light mounts directly on top of the pole and is designed for omnidirectional Type V distribution, spreading light evenly in a full 360-degree circle. Post tops are preferred when the fixture is a visible design element and uniform coverage in all directions is the priority — such as plazas, campus walkways, and parking lot interiors.

Yes — in most cases. Standard commercial poles are topped with a 2 3/8-inch round tenon, which is the universal mounting interface for post top fixtures. If your existing pole uses a different tenon diameter or a straight-pipe top, tenon adapters are available to convert it. Before ordering, verify the tenon diameter at the top of your pole and confirm the fixture’s mounting specification matches. Pole structural rating should also be checked for heavier fixtures in high-wind zones.

For pedestrian walkways and plazas, 12–16 foot poles provide comfortable, human-scale illumination without excessive brightness. For parking lots and campus roadways, 20–25 foot poles are standard — they allow wider fixture spacing while maintaining adequate footcandle levels across the drive aisles. For large open lots and commercial perimeters, 25–30 foot poles with higher-wattage fixtures (100W–150W) provide the coverage needed to minimize the total number of poles required.

Yes — most commercial LED post top lights include a NEMA receptacle (twist-lock socket) on top of the fixture, which accepts a standard plug-in photocell. The photocell activates the fixture at dusk and shuts it off at sunrise automatically. Some fixtures also support 0–10V dimming drivers compatible with bi-level motion sensors, allowing the light to dim to 30–50% output during low-traffic hours and return to full brightness when occupancy is detected.

Type V is a symmetric, circular light distribution pattern that spreads illumination equally in all directions around the fixture — no preferred direction of throw. It is the standard distribution for post top area lights used in parking lot interiors, plazas, and central campus areas where uniform 360-degree coverage is needed. For perimeter applications or roadway lighting where light should be directed primarily forward and to the sides, Type III distribution (available on some square post top fixtures) is the more appropriate choice.
