A DMX controller is a hardware console or software program used for programming and controlling complex or synchronized lighting scenes. As the professional standard, DMX (Digital Multiplex) provides reliable, granular control over multiple DMX LED controllers and fixtures simultaneously, making it ideal for large-scale commercial, architectural, and stage lighting projects.
The DMX System: Controllers & Decoders
The DMX light controller acts as the "brain," sending data across 512 channels. Each channel has a value (0-255) representing an intensity level. However, an LED strip cannot read this signal directly.
A DMX decoder is required to translate. The decoder is assigned to specific channels (e.g., channels 1-3 for an RGB strip) and converts the DMX data into the low-voltage PWM signal that tells the individual diodes on the LED strip exactly how to behave.
